It’s time to give
them their due
SACHIN fans from across the nation have
demanded that their idol be awarded the
Bharat Ratna. But before Sachin, there are
so many who have made so many
worthwhile contributions to their nation,
but have been ignored by the government.
Many of them have not even been given
their due by the Indian media.
These unsung heroes stay away from the
limelight, and are correspondingly given a
cold shoulder by the public, the government
and the media. One of them is Verghese
Kurien. Among others, a strong contender
Anna Hazare. Although he became an icon
only recently, he has made many valuable
contributions to the nation in the past. Why
not recognise the achievements of Kapil
Dev, who brought home the first World
Cup? The list is unlimited, but Indians
cannot see beyond the immediate present.
